General haematology services
The Blood Centre at Rondebosch Medical Centre plays a significant role as a regional resource for challenging cases, with a large number of referrals coming from other colleagues throughout the Western Cape, other provinces and beyond our national borders. We regularly have referrals from Namibia, Nigeria, Angola, Kenya, etc.
Our doctors work closely with the staff in the Bone Marrow Transplant service to provide rapid referral of patients who are candidates for stem cell transplantation.
Specialty services include:
Anaemia -- The Centre offers modern techniques for the diagnosis and management of anaemia, providing a consultative service on the treatment of patients with acquired or congenital anaemias, such as sickle cell disease.
Neutropaenia -- Evaluation and assistance in the management of congenital and acquired causes of neutropaenia, including benign neutropaenia of childhood and drug-induced neutropaenia.
Thrombocytopaenia -- Evaluation and management of patients with immune thrombocytopaenic purpura (ITP) and other causes of thrombocytopaenia, particularly in HIV infection.
Coagulation -- Diagnosis and treatment of patients with bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia and von Willebrand's disease.
Specialized evaluations of individuals predisposed to thrombosis (thrombophilia).
Treatment of Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Treatment of acute myeloid and lymphocytic leukaemia that require intensive induction chemotherapy.
Diagnosis and management of patients with chronic myeloid and lymphoid leukaemia.
Treatment of myelodysplasia and acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) for elderly patients with demethylating agents.
The diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma.
